Kappa Rho History
Kappa Rho Chapter 2010
For Nearly 50 years the Kappa Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi has continued to provide uplift to our communities in the Spirit Of Omega as set forth by our great founders 100 years ago. On October 18th, 1963, Charter Members Simpson Burton, Clarence C. Cooper Jr, John D. Fowler Jr, Mitchell E. Gadsden, James G. Henry, Romeo H. Lewis, William E. Merritt Jr, James L. Newkirk, and Harding C. Powers established the standard for service to our perspective communities that we are proud to continue today.
The first officers of the chapter were ( Basileus) Mitchell Gadsden, (Vice Basileus) William Merritt, Jr, (Keeper of Records and Seals) James Newkirk, (Keeper of Finance) James G. Henry, (Chaplain) Harding C. Powers and (Reporter) Clarence Cooper. These men are the architects of the Chapter and the reputation we enjoy today as a chapter. The chapter is especially proud of it's heritage and the take pride in the the fact that despite it's small size it has persevered as the little chapter that could. This is a testament to the brothers who have served Kappa Rho since its inception until today.
For a number of years the chapter represented four counties that included Bladen, Sampson, Duplin and Onslow. In the past 5 years, Brothers from Onslow County have have branched out from Kappa Rho to form Phi Lambda Lambda in Onslow County.
Today, the chapter continues to aggressive push itself to do more in the name of Omega for our communities. We have literary projects ("Letters to Our Fathers" and "My Destiny") in our school system to support the Assault on Illiteracy Program and inspire reading and writing amongst young men and women of our communities by leading by example. More so, let them know that they need not ashamed to read and write. The Chapter has recently partnered with the Duplin Winery to promote and develop "Omega, The Quintessential Wine". One Dollar from each bottle sold is donated to The Kappa Rho Scholarship Foundation, INC. The proceeds will be used to fund scholarships in the counties we serve.
